    Merger most lovely

    There was a period maybe 20 years ago when The Times, my newspaper of choice, seemed to be redesigning, resizing and/or reformatting itself every five minutes and, because I am not terribly keen on change, this used to bother me. However, because all this tinkering was happening so regularly, I came to realise that – with the exception of the time they moved the crossword off the back page – any adverse reaction never lasted very long.

    Bank of England governor Mark Carney has said the housing market poses the greatest threat to the UK economic outlook but this is almost certainly not true. The greatest threat to the UK economy, argues M&G fund manager Steven Andrew, is more likely to be an overreaction to the Bank of England’s first interest rate hike, as the fear of a ‘return to normal’ is then priced into both financial markets and the expectations of businesses and households.
