    Markets may have regained a degree of equilibrium since what has been dubbed ‘Black Monday’ but sells-off of the magnitude seen since mid-August undoubtedly unnerve investors. What’s happened in China? The People’s Bank of China surprised markets by fixing the US dollar / yuan exchange rate at 6.2298, an effective 1.9% devaluation. Rather than letting its exchange rate float freely, China’s central bank fixes the rate daily and allows trading within +/- 2% relative to that rate against the US dollar.
